S&P Global Ratings Unveils Vault Risk Assessment for DeFi Markets
S&P Global Ratings launched its Vault Risk Assessment framework to bring independent risk transparency to onchain investment vehicles.
S&P Global Ratings introduced a new analytical framework called the Vault Risk Assessment on Monday, extending the firm's footprint in the decentralized finance space with a tool designed to evaluate digital asset investment vehicles operating on blockchain networks.
The Singapore-based announcement positions the VRA as an independent risk-transparency mechanism for onchain vaults — pooled digital asset structures that have grown in prominence as institutional and retail participants seek yield-generating alternatives within DeFi ecosystems. The framework is intended to give investors a standardized lens through which to evaluate risks that have historically been opaque or inconsistently disclosed.

The launch builds on S&P Global's broader push to apply traditional credit-market discipline to emerging digital asset infrastructure. The move reflects a wider industry trend in which legacy financial institutions are developing proprietary frameworks to address regulatory and investor demand for credible risk benchmarks in crypto markets. S&P Global Ratings, a division of S&P Global Inc., which trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker SPGI, did not disclose pricing or a timeline for how broadly the VRA will be deployed across specific protocols or platforms.
